Four Travel Purchases to Research Before Clicking “Buy Now”

Four Travel Purchases to Research Before Clicking "Buy Now"

Booking a trip is fun right up until you start realizing how many things you actually need to book.

First, there’s the flights. Then somewhere to stay. Maybe a rental car. Travel insurance. Airport parking. Baggage. Seat selection. Before long, the “great deal” you spotted online has become a collection of separate purchases, each with its own terms and conditions.

And that’s exactly why it pays to slow down a little.

You don’t need to spend hours researching every coffee shop near your hotel before you travel. But for bigger purchases, taking ten or fifteen minutes to compare your options could save you money – or help you avoid an annoying surprise later on.

Keep reading on to learn four travel purchases that are worth researching before you click “Buy Now.:

  1. Flights

Everyone’s seen a flight advertised at a price that seems almost too good to ignore.

The trouble is, the first number you see isn’t always the number you end up paying.

Before booking, check what is actually included. Does the far include a carry-on bag? What about checked luggage? Will you have to pay extra to choose a seat? Are there fees if you need to change your plans?

A cheap ticket can still be a good deal, but only if you’re comparing like for like.

It’s also worth looking at the flight times. A slightly cheaper flight might leave at 5am, involve a six-hour layover, and/or land at an airport much farther from your actual destination. By the time you’ve paid for transport and spent half the day traveling, the saving may not feel quite as impressive.

And if you’re booking through a third-party website, check who you’ll need to contact if something goes wrong. Saving a small amount sometimes means adding an extra layer of hassle later.

  1. Accommodations

Hotel photos can – at times – be very convincing.

A room might look spacious online. The pool may look beautiful. The location might be described as “minutes from the city center.” That last one can mean very different things depending on who’s doing the walking.

Before you book, look at the property on a map. Check how far it actually is from the places you want to visit. If you’re relying on public transportation, see what’s nearby.

Then read some recent guest reviews.

Don’t panic over one complaint from someone who was unhappy about everything. Instead, look for patterns. If ten people mention poor cleanliness, noisy rooms, or misleading photographs, that’s worth paying attention to.

Also, check the final price. Taxes, resort fees, parking, breakfast, and other extras will change the cost considerably. So, be prepared for that.

  1. Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is one of those purchases people often make quickly – if they make it at all.

The problem is, not all policies cover the same things.

Think about your trip before choosing a policy. Where are you going? How long will you be away? Are you taking part in any activities that might have special coverage requirements? Do you have expensive belongings you’re taking with you?

If you’re comparing the best travel insurance companies, don’t just look for the lower premium and assume you’ve found the right policy. Look at what is actually covered, the exclusions, policy limits, deductibles, and the process for making a claim.

Cancellation coverage, for example, may only apply in specific circumstances. Medical coverage may have limits or exclusions. Some activities may require additional protection.

The best policy for a weekend city break might not be the best choice for a long international trip.

The details matter. Give yourself enough time to read them fully.

  1. Rental Cars

Renting a car seems straightforward. Pick a vehicle. Enter your dates. Pay. Collect the keys. And you’re off!

But then you get to the rental desk.

This is where extra charges sometimes begin appearing.

Look at what’s included in the quoted price. Do so before booking. Check insurance options, mileage limits, fuel policies, additional driver fees, and any deposit requirements.

It might also be useful to check where the rental office is located. Is it actually at the airport, or will you need to take a shuttle to an off-site location?

And before you drive away, inspect the car.

Take a few photos or videos of any existing marks or damage. It only takes a minute, and you’ll have a record of the vehicle’s condition when you collect it. This will prevent any accusations later on.

To conclude, no one wants to spend the weeks before a vacation buried in terms and conditions. Some purchases, though, are worth a second look. And this is why you should follow this post’s advice.

Doing so will ensure you are much more prepared – and hopefully, you’ll experience less issues on the trip.
