How Old Do You Have to Be to Adopt a Dog: Animal SheltersHow Old Do You Have to Be to Adopt a Dog: RescuesRequirements You Must Meet Other Than AgeWelcoming a Dog Into Your Life

Adopting a dog comes with a handful of requirements, and age is one of the main ones that you will run into. However, there isn’t just a single answer to how old you have to be to adopt a dog, though you generally must be at least 18 years old in most cases.

Still, the exact age requirement depends on where you’re adopting from, with some organizations setting the bar at 21 and even higher depending on the dog. After all, some dogs may be better suited for older individuals, depending on their care needs and temperament. There may also be differences from one location to another. For example, adopting a dog in Texas may have a completely different age requirement than in Alaska.

Therefore, how old you have to be to adopt a dog has a multilayered answer that requires some digging, and our article is going to cover everything you need to know. Read on to get your answers.

How Old Do You Have to Be to Adopt a Dog: Animal Shelters

Most animal shelters require adopters to be at least 18 years old. This is because the adoption paperwork is a legal contract that transfers ownership and responsibility of the animal from the shelter to the person adopting the dog. Naturally, a person must be a legal adult to be able to sign it.

However, some shelters may allow adopters under 18 in specific situations, such as when a parent or legal guardian co-signs the adoption contract and takes the legal responsibility of the dog. At the same time, some shelters, particularly private shelters that have stricter adoption policies, set their minimum age at 21, particularly for dogs with a troubling background or aggressive behavior.

If you’re under the required age, this doesn’t mean that you can’t adopt a dog. You can still visit the shelter with a parent or legal guardian, have them complete the adoption in their name, and care for the dog as a family. Many shelters actually encourage this, as it shows the entire household is on board with the adoption, not just you.

How Old Do You Have to Be to Adopt a Dog: Rescues

When it comes to rescue organizations, the age requirement tends to be stricter than in shelters. While many rescues also set their minimum at 18, it is common to see requirements of 21 or even 25, especially among breed-specific rescues and smaller volunteer-run organizations.

The reasoning behind the higher age requirement all comes down to stability. Rescues invest a significant amount of time and money into each dog, often covering fostering, rehabilitation, training, and veterinary care. They want to place their dogs in homes with stable living situations and steady income, which younger adopters may still be working toward.

On top of age, rescues typically evaluate applicants much more thoroughly than shelters with interviews, reference checks, and home visits. That’s why, even if you meet the age requirement on paper, you should be prepared to demonstrate that you can provide a stable and lasting home for the dog you intend to adopt. We cover what these additional requirements may be below.

Requirements You Must Meet Other Than Age

Being old enough is just the starting point; shelters and rescues often have several other requirements that you must meet. While the exact requirements vary from one organization to another, here are the most common ones you should be prepared for when adopting a dog.

    • Valid Government-Issued ID: You must present a valid ID, such as a driver’s license, that verifies both your age and your identity. You may also be required to provide proof of your current address, especially if there’s a home visit involved.
    • Landlord Approval: If you’re renting, the shelter or the rescue may ask for written proof that your landlord allows dogs, including any breed or weight restrictions your building may have. If you’re adopting a dog because you need an emotional support animal and have an ESA letter, this may not apply to you.
  • Ability to Provide for the Dog: You may be asked about your work schedule, lifestyle, and financial readiness to cover the expenses for food, supplies, and vet care.

Welcoming a Dog Into Your Life

So, how old do you have to be to adopt a dog? The answer is 18 in most cases, though some shelters and rescues raise the requirement to 21 or higher. If you’re under the minimum age, adopting with a parent or guardian as the official adopter is a great way to welcome a dog into your family.

Regardless, the real journey begins once you meet the requirements other than age. When adopting a dog, take the time to find the right match, listen to the shelter/rescue staff, prepare your home, and establish a routine once you bring home your new dog so that your new companion can settle in smoothly from day one.
