Spark plugs and ignition coil boots may be inspected for wear, contamination, or carbon tracking. Coil operation can also be tested where appropriate. If the source of a misfire remains unclear, compression or leak down testing can help rule out internal engine damage. For catalytic converter or oxygen sensor codes, technicians may compare upstream and downstream oxygen sensor signals while also checking for exhaust leaks. The objective is to identify the true cause rather than simply replacing the component named in a trouble code.

Park the vehicle and arrange a tow when the check engine light is flashing, the engine is shaking heavily, or you notice a strong smell of raw fuel.
