What Do Gynaecologists Wish More Women Knew About Their Health?

Over the years, many gynaecologists have noted a consistent set of concerns and misunderstandings patients face. It could be uncertainty about their menstrual cycle, confusion surrounding contraception, or feelings of embarrassment in discussing their intimate health concerns. What makes it worse is that much of the information in this field, while easier to access than ever, is often incomplete, outdated, or buried under piles of misinformation. The truth is: most of the common issues surrounding women’s health are quite simple in nature and can be addressed way earlier if more women knew what was normal, what was not, and when they should seek help. If you ask your gynaecologist what they wish more women understood, here are some of the things you will probably hear.

To get the biggest one out of the way, a lot of women seem to think that if they are facing a serious health problem, it will always make itself known to them. When you think about conditions like cervical abnormalities, sexually transmitted infections, polycystic ovary syndrome, or even gynaecological cancers, all of them have a tendency to develop in the background for a long time before causing any noticeable symptoms. This is arguably the one thing that most gynaecologists want you to understand, and one of the main reasons why they ask you to engage in routine screenings. Something like cervical screening is absolutely amazing for detecting abnormal cell changes long before they become cancerous, allowing treatment at a much earlier stage. Even if you feel fine, don’t trust this feeling right away. Notice any subtle changes that you may have easily missed, such as a small change in your menstrual pattern, a bit of persistent bloating, bleeding after sex, unusual discharge, or pelvic discomfort. Not that any of these are a clear sign that something is seriously wrong, but you should still consider discussing them with a healthcare professional right away.

Stop tolerating unnecessarily severe pain

You may find yourself inclined to think that menstrual pain, living with menstrual pain, is just a part of being a woman. While mild discomfort during your periods is normal and expected, if your pain is getting to the point that it is disrupting your ability to work, attend school, exercise, or carry out daily activities, you need to get it investigated as soon as possible. The reason is that there are some serious conditions out there that can all cause significant pain in the reproductive system – things like endometriosis, adenomyosis, fibroids, and pelvic inflammatory disease. A similar case applies to pain that comes from intercourse. A lot of gynaecologists have come across women who dismiss it as stress, anxiety, or just something that they need to tolerate. Although those things can be true, painful sex can also sometimes be a sign of infection, hormonal changes, or other underlying conditions that, if identified on time, can be successfully treated. If someone tells you that your symptoms are normal and you should be more accustomed to living with them, avoid such advice and seek help immediately. Think of it like this: persistent pain is a message from your body. It is trying to tell you something; it is your duty to listen.

Your menstrual cycle shares way more about your health than you think

You may not realise it, but your monthly cycle can offer some very interesting clues about how well you’re doing in terms of your hormonal balance, reproductive health, thyroid function, stress levels, and metabolic health. If you are experiencing irregular cycles, extremely heavy bleeding, or periods that suddenly become lighter or longer, it’s a clear sign that something is off within your system. Because of how much your doctors can ascertain from just a glance at your menstrual health, they often ask and encourage their patients to track their cycles even when not trying to conceive. If you keep a record of bleeding patterns, symptoms, and cycle lengths, you will make it much easier for them to identify any wear changes in your body and provide the correct diagnosis when the time comes.

Start focusing on screening and preventative care

Go to any gynaecologist in London, and the first thing they’ll tell you is that the most effective care always happens before the symptoms become noticeable. As mentioned before, routine cervical screening,  STI testing, HPV vaccinations, and simple regular health review can identify your risks long before they develop into any severe or serious problem. HPV in particular is a very good example. Just like cervical, many women hear the term and immediately link it with cancer. When we look at the numbers, HPV is an extremely common problem, and most infections clear themselves naturally without causing any serious troubles. The reason you still need to go for regular health check-ups is to make sure you don’t end up among the few cases where persistent infections lead to abnormal cervical changes.

Women’s vaginal health varies from person to person

Look, the vagina is not something to expect complete consistency from. Your vaginal discharge changes throughout the menstrual cycle. Your libido fluctuates. Your hormonal levels rise and fall. Even menstrual symptoms can change from one cycle to the next. Variation with vaginal health is normal and an expected part of it. At the same time, doctors still remain interested in checking for changes that continue to persist in your system. It can be a strong odour that won’t go away, unusual discharge, itching, burning, bleeding between periods, or new lumps and bumps appearing out of nowhere. All of these have simple explanations, but they should also always be assessed, not ignored simply because they are something embarrassing to discuss. Remember, your gynaecologist probably talks about these issues every single day. It is a part of their work, and no question is too awkward for them. If something feels off, ask with zero hesitation.

Menopause is not something you must tolerate

Menopause is a condition that tends to arrive out of nowhere. All of a sudden, you’ll experience either some or all of its symptoms, all at once: hot flushes, sleep disruption, anxiety, mood changes, brain fog, and changes in sexual health. The most unfortunate part of it all is that women have long been conditioned into thinking that this is all a natural part of ageing and something they just need to put up with. Although yes, menopause will come for all women sooner or later, you need to understand that there are now more treatment options available for it than ever before. From lifestyle interventions to hormone replacement therapy, the symptoms that affect your quality of life can be easily managed. All you need to do is stop putting up with it and seek help as soon as the symptoms arrive.

Take care of your reproductive health

Look, at the end of the day, if there is one thing tying all these things together, the one thing that your gynaecologist would want you to know is that no concern of yours should be treated lightly. Any changes in our bodies occur for a reason, and it is your responsibility to pay attention to and address any issues long before they pose a serious threat to your health. If you can do that by simply checking in with your doctor regularly, staying informed, listening to your body, and seeking help without any hesitation, then just take the next step. Whatever comes next will almost always be better than waiting and hoping that your problems will disappear on their own.
