60%, 70%, 85% or 100% Zebra Shades: How Much Light Blocking Do You Need?

60%, 70%, 85% or 100% Zebra Shades: How Much Light Blocking Do You Need?

A light-blocking percentage sounds precise, but the same fabric can feel very different in a small north-facing room and a wide west-facing room. Window direction, glass area, wall color, and the position of the alternating bands all affect the result. That is why zebra shades are best chosen around how a room is actually used rather than assuming the highest percentage is always better.

With zebra shades, sheer and solid bands slide past each other. Open alignment keeps a room brighter; closed alignment increases privacy and cuts more direct light. The percentage mainly describes the fabric, not the entire installed window, so edge gaps and mounting style can still affect the final darkness.

60% Is for Bright Everyday Living

A 60% zebra shade is a practical fit for living rooms, breakfast areas, kitchens, and family spaces where daylight is part of the appeal. It softens strong brightness without making the room feel heavily shaded.

This level works especially well for people who spend most of the day in the room and want a comfortable glow rather than dramatic dimming. On an east-facing window, for example, closing the bands can tame sharp morning sun while leaving enough ambient light that the room still feels open.

The tradeoff is simple: 60% favors daylight over darkness. It is less suitable for light-sensitive sleepers, nurseries, or rooms where strong nighttime privacy is the main goal. It makes more sense for households that want flexible daytime light and an airy look.

70% Gives More Glare Control

A 70% zebra shade makes sense when 60% still feels too bright but full room darkening would be unnecessary. Sunny living rooms, dining areas, street-facing spaces, and home offices often fall into this middle range.

For someone working on a laptop near a west-facing window, the denser fabric can reduce afternoon glare while still leaving useful daylight in the room. A linen texture at this opacity can also soften the visual effect, which suits homeowners who want the shade to feel more like part of the decor than a purely technical window covering.

If you prefer one continuous fabric surface instead of adjustable bands, light filtering roller shades can address a similar need for softer daylight. Zebra shades are more useful when you want to shift between view, privacy, and brightness without raising the shade completely.

85% Suits Strong Sun and Screens

An 85% zebra shade is better for rooms that regularly struggle with direct sunlight. Think south- or west-facing home offices, TV rooms, family rooms with large windows, or dining spaces that become uncomfortably bright late in the day.

With the bands closed, this level creates a noticeably dimmer interior than 60% or 70%. That can improve screen visibility and give street-facing rooms more visual separation from outdoors without moving all the way to a blackout setup.

It also suits households with changing routines. The bands can stay more open in the morning, overlap further as sunlight intensifies, and close more fully when privacy matters in the evening. For a bedroom, 85% can work for someone who still likes some morning light, but it is usually not the best choice for a shift worker or a highly light-sensitive sleeper.

100% Is for Sleep and Maximum Privacy

A 100% blackout zebra fabric is the strongest option when blocking direct light through the opaque sections is the priority. Bedrooms, nurseries, media rooms, guest rooms with strong sunrise exposure, and rooms facing bright exterior lighting are the clearest use cases.

It is particularly useful for people who sleep during the day or want stronger privacy after dark. Still, “100% blackout” should not be read as a promise that the entire room will become pitch black. The rating applies to the fabric. Light can still appear around the sides, near the cassette, or at other installation gaps.

For rooms where darkness matters most, measurement and mounting coverage deserve as much attention as the fabric percentage. An outside mount with extra overlap can reduce perimeter light better than a narrow inside mount. In especially light-sensitive bedrooms, pairing the shade with drapery or another edge-covering layer can further reduce glow.
