Buying a Car Over £25K: Does HP Still Make Sense?

Personal Contract Purchase (PCP) has long been the dominant way to finance a new car in the UK, and its popularity has increasingly spilled into the used market too, especially for vehicles priced above £25,000. Low monthly payments and the flexibility to swap cars every few years made it hugely popular in showrooms across the country.

But recent shifts in the used car market mean the maths behind these deals is changing. Let’s look at whether Hire Purchase (HP) now offers a more sensible path for your next vehicle.

Why the Traditional PCP Advantage Has Eroded

PCP relies on the Guaranteed Future Value (GFV), the predicted worth of the car at the end of the agreement. After used values spiked during the 2021-22 supply shortages and cooled sharply afterwards, finance companies have recalibrated these figures. To protect themselves against sudden market drops, lenders are setting more conservative balloon payments and tightening mileage caps.

That means the monthly payments buyers are quoted now look less attractive than they did a few years ago, and the equity cushion at the end is harder to predict. In the past, you could often use leftover equity as a deposit for your next car. Today, many drivers finish a three-year PCP agreement with far less equity than they’d expected, sometimes nothing at all once mileage penalties and condition charges are applied.

The Real Cost of a Used Volvo XC40

Take a used plug-in hybrid Volvo XC40 priced at £28,000 as an example. If you choose a three-year PCP with a 10% deposit at a rate around 9.9% APR (typical for used-car finance in late 2025, though prime borrowers may see closer to 8.9%), your monthly payments will be lower because you aren’t paying off the full value.

But if you want to keep the car, you face a balloon payment of around £12,000. If you can’t pay that lump sum, you have to refinance it with a second agreement, extending your debt for another two or three years.

Take out a five-year HP agreement on the same £28,000 Volvo instead and your monthly payments are higher from day one. But you’re actively paying down the loan balance every month. By year five, you own the car outright with no final lump sum to worry about. Add up the total interest paid over the whole period, and a single HP agreement often works out cheaper than running consecutive PCP deals or refinancing a balloon.

How to Compare HP Car Finance Deals Effectively

When you’re looking for the best rates, it pays to look beyond the dealership showroom. The FCA banned discretionary commission arrangements back in January 2021, which stopped dealers from inflating interest rates to earn more commission.

That’s since been followed by the Supreme Court’s August 2025 ruling in the motor finance commission cases and the FCA’s redress scheme, which together have put commission structures under a level of scrutiny the industry hasn’t seen before. The result is that dealers now have a much stronger incentive to be upfront about how finance is priced. Direct lenders have used that shift to compete harder on rate.

Weighing up independent HP car finance deals before you visit the dealership gives you a solid benchmark to negotiate against. Direct lenders often provide clearer terms and lower rates for borrowers with good credit. Having an agreement in place lets you negotiate as a cash buyer, which keeps the vehicle price separate from the finance discussion.

Match the Choice to Your Long-Term Goals

PCP still makes sense if you genuinely want to change your car every three years and you’re confident you’ll stay under the mileage cap. It functions almost like a lease, giving you predictable monthly outgoings for a fixed period. With PCP you’re essentially paying to use the car, not to own it.

HP suits buyers who want certainty and intend to keep their vehicle for five years or more. Because there are no mileage limits, you don’t have to worry about penalty charges if your commute changes. Every payment brings you closer to full ownership, which is a real benefit with premium vehicles that still hold decent value later in life.

A Clear Path to Vehicle Ownership

The decision comes down to what you value more: lower monthly payments now, or a lower total cost over time. With used car values still unpredictable, the guaranteed ownership that comes with HP is looking more attractive for premium car buyers. Look at the total cost rather than just the monthly outlay, and you can make a choice that protects your finances over the long run.
